Promotional Pens make great promotional giveaways because everyone uses pens. The question you need to ask as a promotional pen buyer is, why would someone use the pen I provide as opposed to the one they are already using? Even though pens are one of the most inexpensive promotional products available, spending an extra nickel could make a huge difference in the quality and longevity of the product. Here is what I mean: I had a customer years ago that worked for a large health-care facility. She ordered Bic pens for one department but the other department insisted on saving a nickel a pen and always purchases a cheaper copy of the Bic pen. Well, she moonlighted as a waitress and would use some of the pens from work. She quickly found out that the cheaper pens were indeed that… CHEAP. She ended up throwing away half of the cheaper pens because they didn’t work or quickly ran out of ink. She soon convinced her coworkers to invest the extra nickel. It may seem funny to spend $25.00 or more on a pen for a valued customer but an embroidered polo costs just as much and is not likely to be used on a daily basis. I’m not a big fan of giving out pens at trade shows simply because that’s what every one else is doing. However, if you are targeting a specific customer, such as the company owner or manager, a pre-show invite to pick up their “free gift” for stopping by their booth could dramatically increase your tradeshow ROI.
